Q: How does New Wave Publishers grade its used books?

A: Most of the used books we sell are out of print or otherwise not new. Some of our books are new, however.

We grade used books to the following standards. Dustjackets are graded separately to the same standards. Dustjacketed hardcovers are delivered in Brodart protectors.

NEW or LIKE NEW: regardless of age.It has a tight binding, clean straight boards, clean bright textblock.

FINE: For all practical purposes a fine book is approaching new, but may have been read carefully at least once. Its text block is clean, its binding is tight, its boards are crisp.

NEAR FINE: It may be a very new book whose only defect is a previous owner's name on a fly (these names can often be removed and replaced with a bookplate if this book is to be given as a gift).

VERY GOOD : This is a terrific used book. Its condition is approaching fine, but it shows rubbing at the extremities. In all respects, it is a clean book. It may have an inscription in it or a previous owner's signature. We can remove signatures and sometimes remove inscriptions, allowing you to add a gift bookplate if this book is being purchased as a gift. A Very Good dustjacket may have closed tears but no chips.

GOOD: Clearly not a new book, clearly a used book. May have been read multiple times but still has a lot of life remaining, may have corner and edge wear, may show foxing, may have a loose binding. We take pains to note these defects, but will sometimes shorthand to this description a book with multiple subtle defects.

FAIR : Shows extensive wear but is still held together by its loose binding. A book in fair condition is often called a reader's copy because it is seldom valuable as a collector's book. Any books in this condition are repaired before shipping.

POOR: This is the lowest grade of book in our descriptions... A copy in this condition is often held together with rubber bands or twine or, heaven forbid, plastic tape. It is characterized by torn or missing pages, missing, broken or torn boards, a damaged spine, a loose or crumbling binding. Difficult to read, the value of a book in this condition is mostly as an item to re-bind or restore.
